Creating an open plan student breakout and events area
CAT B

University of East London
The University of East London sought to transform an underused and segregated section of its campus into a vibrant, multi-functional breakout and events space for students. The vision was to create a dynamic, open-plan environment that could flexibly support social interaction, collaboration, and student-led activities.
The new space, known as The Pump House, was designed to encourage a sense of community and connection, bringing together elements of hospitality, learning, and recreation. The design focused on maximising natural light, improving flow, and creating an atmosphere that felt modern, inclusive, and energising.
- Major internal strip out and removal of structural walls
- Full M&E redesign and installation
- Controlled feature lighting to enhance mood and flexibility
- Bespoke joinery and fitted catering equipment
- New bi-fold curtain wall system with external landscaping and seating
- Delivery within a strict four-week programme and defined budget
The result is a bright and engaging open-plan environment that successfully blurs the line between indoor and outdoor space. The introduction of new bi-fold curtain walling and landscaped seating has created a strong visual and functional connection to the surrounding campus, encouraging year-round use.
Delivered on time and within budget, the completed scheme has become a focal point of student life — a versatile hub that supports events, collaboration, and social activity in equal measure. The Pump House now stands as a key example of how thoughtful design can revitalise existing university spaces into valuable community assets.
